OINP for Recent Graduates: How 3 Months of Work Can Lead to PR in Ontario

You finished your Ontario degree or diploma, you found a job, and now you are watching your work permit calendar with growing anxiety, wondering how many years of experience Ontario will demand before it lets you stay for good. Here is the news that changes that math: under Ontario's new provincial nomination stream, a recent Ontario graduate may need as little as 3 months of work in their job offer position to meet the stream's work experience requirement. It is one of the shortest work experience requirements in Canadian provincial immigration right now, and most people have not even heard of it yet.

The Background: Ontario Rebuilt Its Program

Through amendments in force since June 25, 2026, Ontario removed its 8 previous nomination streams and introduced the new Ontario Workforce Priority stream under amended Ontario Regulation 422/17, as announced on ontario.ca. The stream's detailed eligibility pages went live on July 20, 2026, and the expression of interest system is anticipated to open later this summer. The stream covers skilled foreign workers with a qualifying Ontario job offer in any National Occupational Classification occupation, plus self-employed physicians.

For workers with a job offer in TEER category 0, 1, 2 or 3, ontario.ca lists several ways to meet the work experience requirement: at least 6 months of consecutive, paid, full-time work in the job offer position within the last 12 months; at least 2 years of cumulative, paid, full-time work in the same occupation within the last 5 years, or the equivalent part-time experience; a licence or authorization required by law for the position; or, for recent Ontario graduates, at least 3 months of consecutive, paid, full-time work in the job offer position within the 12 months before applying.

The 3-Month Route: Who Actually Qualifies

According to ontario.ca, a recent Ontario graduate is someone who graduated from an eligible Ontario institution within the last 3 years with a post-secondary degree or diploma that took at least 2 years to complete on a full-time basis, an Ontario College Graduate Certificate, a Master's degree, or a PhD. The 3 months of work must be in the employment position your employer is seeking approval for: the same occupation, the same employer, the same location, at least 30 hours of paid work per week. There is a second advantage that gets less attention: for TEER 0 to 3 job offers, a qualifying recent Ontario graduate does not need a language test at all, the credential itself satisfies the language requirement.

The Common Mistake: Hearing "3 Months" and Ignoring the Fine Print

The dangerous shortcut version of this news is "work anywhere for 3 months and Ontario nominates you". That is not the rule. The 3 months count only in the exact job offer position with the employer who is sponsoring your position through the employer portal, and only within the 12 months before you apply. Time with a different employer, part-time months, or a co-op inside your study program will not fit this specific route. Note also the exceptions: transport truck drivers and bus, subway and transit operators must show 6 months even if they are recent graduates, and TEER 4 or 5 job offers carry a separate requirement of 9 months of cumulative work with no graduate shortcut. Your employer matters too: they must have been in active business for at least 3 years, meet revenue and staffing thresholds, and complete their own application.

What to Do Right Now

The expression of interest system has not opened yet, which means today is the rare moment when preparation beats speed. Confirm your credential is from an eligible institution and within the 3-year window. Map your work history against the requirement honestly, with pay records to prove it. Talk to your employer early, because the process starts with them registering the job offer, and their deadlines after an invitation are short: 14 days for the employer, 17 days for you, and you can only submit after your employer files.
